Synopsis:
After experiencing a minor traffic accident, Grigorije Žetar, a cynical and temperamental truck driver, along with Sofija Stanišić, a hitchhiker he picked up along the way, arrives in a nearby town which turns out to be Nehaj - a place where, during the war, he saved a group of locals from execution. He learns that the townspeople, believing him dead, erected a monument in his honor and declared him a national hero. However, when Grigorije enthusiastically announces he's alive, they not only refuse to believe him but also beat him and imprison him for alleged disorderly conduct and defamation of heroic reputation. Grigorije becomes a prisoner in a strange prison, where the only other occupant is the guard Stanoje. Grigorije soon discovers that local elections are underway in Nehaj, and the only serious candidate is the current mayor, Luka Savić, who has built his political career and reputation on lies that he participated in Grigorije's heroic feat. He even carved his name on the monument right below Grigorije's. Luka tries every means to force Grigorije to admit he is not the same man honored with the monument. Grigorije's initial instinct to escape soon turns into stubbornness and a desire to stay and prove the opposite. This is fueled by a strange power play with the guard Stanoje, as well as the charming Sofija, the hitchhiker, who Grigorije finds increasingly appealing. The town quickly divides between those who believe Grigorije was there and who believe Luka, and Grigorije realizes there is no turning back from this game, understanding that proving his identity has now become a political game and a fight for survival. In the end, Grigorije is ultimately forced to surrender, admitting to the gathered people of Nehaj that he has been deceiving them all along.
