Sonya’s marriage to Milisav falls apart as they struggle unsuccessfully to conceive a child, and she faces bullying from his mother, Olga. After ten years of working abroad, Milisav Papić returns home to Serbia. While visiting Velja Ranković (61), to whom he brings a letter from his son with whom he worked in Germany, Milisav meets Velja’s daughter Sonja (22), whom he falls in love with at first sight. Believing that Milisav will provide Sonja with an easy life, Velja agrees to give Milisav Sonja’s hand in marriage. Milisav brings a car that brings him pride, and sells it to buy a wedding ring. After the wedding, Sonja begins life with Milisav and his mother Olga (64) in their family home, in a village about fifty kilometers from hers. Years pass, but Sonja and Milisav still don’t have children, which Olga uses as a reason to humiliate Sonja at every opportunity. She calls her barren and feleric, and insists that Milisav returns her to her father. After seeing one of these situations, a curmudgeonly old man from the village, Dušan (71) tells Sonja that it is not her fault that they do not have children. Before he can say anything else, Olga interrupts Dušan, but his words remain in Sonja’s memory. With every year that passes in the family union, Olga becomes more and more unbearable. Sonja and Milisav go from doctor to doctor only to get the same answer - both are fine. Without a logical explanation as to why she cannot get pregnant, Sonja remembers Dušan’s words. In desperation, Sonja goes to the senile old man Dušan, but in a few lucid moments he informs her that her father surely knows why they cannot have children. These words begin to reveal the buried family secrets of two families, Ranković and Papić. Sonja learns that during the Second World War Milisav’s father, blackmailed with the lives of his wife and child, had to reveal the location of his godfather Vuk hiding. One of the witnesses to Vuk’s execution was her father. At that moment, Vuk curses his godfather’s family to have no descendants as punishment for what they had done to him. Sonja, who herself has experienced many difficult moments in her life, feels called to correct the guilt that was inflicted on an innocent person and to finally break the family curse. In her search for the Vuk’s remains, Sonja encounters numerous obstacles and faces resistance in order to accomplish her mission. Despite this, she resolutely continues her quest as Milisav battles his own demons from the past. Finally, after many years, Sonja manages to find Vuk’s corpse remains at the dog cemetery, and buries them in the family grave. Then she discovers that she is pregnant and about to give birth to a daughter, which finally allows her to fulfill her dream of motherhood. The film is a touching story about family sins and curses, the unwavering spirit and strength of Sonja and Milisav’s love, which can heal even the deepest wounds.
