Synopsis:
In the eternal struggle between East and West, at the crossroads of northern and southern Europe, stands Bärbel – a woman of exceptional inner strength. Born in the turmoil of World War II, she has spent her life searching for her identity and her lost family, from whom she was separated by post-war political circumstances, the Berlin Wall, and later, the wars in the former Yugoslavia. Reborn is a documentary about broken and rediscovered bonds, about the quiet struggle of an individual in the shadow of great historical forces. At the heart of the story is Bärbel, a German woman who, in 1989, at the age of 45, receives a letter from the Red Cross informing her that a man from a small town in central Serbia has been searching for her for years – a man claiming to be her father. A long-hidden family secret compels her to travel to Serbia to meet the father she has never known. This is a film about searching – for roots, belonging, and truth. Both intimate and universal, Reborn reveals how vital closeness, understanding, and acceptance are in a world full of borders, silences, and lost relationships.
